Fifth graders from Carrollwood Day School visit Moffitt Cancer Center to conduct research for an end-of-year project.

For fifth graders in Ms. Stephanie Rodriguez’s class at Carrollwood Day School, the end of the school year marks an opportunity to celebrate all that they’ve learned throughout the year. On May 13, the students visited to conduct research for their end-of-the-year project focused on balanced health, promoting equitable humanity and whole-person care.

Fifth graders at Carrollwood Day School prep for their day at Moffitt Cancer Center.

The students started their day in the Health Outcomes and Behavior exercise lab where they participated in the same fitness training offered to Moffitt patients undergoing treatment. The group later heard from Moffitt’s Wellness Office about the importance of balanced lifestyles to offset stress and preserve mental health. Later, representatives from the Moffitt Foundation inspired the kids to get involved with the cancer center’s annual fundraising event that raises money for cancer research.

The highlight of the day was a visit from volunteers in Moffitt’s Pet Therapy Program. Three special pups showed the students how animals can bring joy during even the most trying times. The class also took trips to the Integrated Mathematical Oncology collaboratorium to learn how scientists are using math to help cure cancer and the Arts in Medicine studio to create inspirational beads of hope to take home as a souvenir from their field trip.
