Since 2018, volunteers at Moffitt have been empowering patients and families with essential digital skills.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, the digital sherpa program from Volunteer Services is transforming patient care through the power of technology. In collaboration with the Patient Empowerment Network, this program aims to provide patients with the skills and confidence needed to navigate Moffitt’s digital health care tools and resources. The service is available at the inpatient hospitals, including Moffitt Cancer Center at the Magnolia Campus and Moffitt McKinley Hospital. This program has been an integral part of Moffitt since February 2018, with the expansion to Moffitt McKinley Hospital launching in November 2023.

Volunteers, known as digital sherpas, offer personalized assistance to patients, guiding them through the use of Moffitt’s various digital platforms and other relevant technologies.

“I was inspired to volunteer by my desire to help others, particularly older individuals who struggle with technology,” said Tiffany Hoang, a sherpa volunteer. “The program provides invaluable resources for patients and their families, from photo sharing and video calls to educational tools and discharge plans. These resources ensure that patients stay connected and informed, receiving the best possible care.”

Key services provided by digital sherpas:

Get Well Network

Patients learn to use this interactive platform available on in-room televisions. They can access educational videos, entertainment options and information about their treatment plan and health care team.

Patient Portal

Volunteers assist patients in navigating the portal to view their medical records, check appointment schedules and communicate with caregivers.

Internet and Social Media

Sherpas help patients and caregivers use the internet and social media safely, set up email accounts, join online support groups and connect with friends and family.

Virtual Communication and Apps

Patients are shown how to use various apps and virtual tools, such as video calling platforms, ride-share apps for transportation and health-related apps for additional resources and support.

Digital sherpas receive extensive training from the Patient Empowerment Network to ensure they can provide comprehensive support to patients. Some of the training includes practical simulations to prepare them for real-world interactions with patients.

“While I was originally assigned as a sherpa by the Volunteer Services team, the experiences and exchanges I have with patients have encouraged me to continue for years. I can remember specific patients from when I first started volunteering. While our role is to tell these individuals about the resources they have, I’ve also learned a lot from them. I’m lucky enough to have heard many life stories and tales of wisdom,” said Sarah Goodchild, a digital sherpa volunteer at Moffitt.

The program has nine dedicated volunteers and continues to expand, welcoming new individuals eager to make a positive impact. If you are passionate about technology and helping others, consider becoming a digital sherpa. Your efforts can provide valuable support to cancer patients and their families, improving their health care experience and overall well-being. “I would advise anyone interested in volunteering to be kind, patient and always wear a smile! This positive attitude greatly improves the environment and encourages patients to engage with the digital resources Moffitt has to offer,” Goodchild said.
