Moffitt Cancer Center offers CAR T therapy to patients from West Palm Beach, Florida, and throughout the country at our center in Tampa. CAR T therapy is a revolutionary type of immunotherapy that harnesses the body’s natural healing abilities to attack cancer cells. By merging breakthrough treatments like CAR T therapy with individualized attention and compassionate supportive care, Moffitt is able to achieve more positive outcomes and improve quality of life for our patients.

What does CAR T therapy involve?

T cells are part of the body’s immune system. Their purpose is to attack viruses, bacteria and other noncancerous threats to health. During CAR T therapy, the patient’s own T cells are genetically modified with chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) that allow them to recognize a specific protein in cancer cells. Once modified, the T cells seek out and destroy cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

Here is a brief overview of the one-time CAR T therapy procedure:

  • A blood sample is taken from the patient.
  • The T cells are separated from other cells in a lab and modified.
  • The patient undergoes a few days of chemotherapy to help prepare the body for new cells.
  • The modified T cells are infused back into the patient.

What types of cancer does CAR T therapy treat?

CAR T therapy is largely used to treat cancers that affect the blood and bone marrow, such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. It has been recognized as a successful treatment for certain patients who have not responded to chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other methods.

Patients from West Palm Beach, FL, who are traveling to Moffitt to receive CAR T therapy or another treatment are invited to take advantage of discounted rates at one of our partner hotels.
