As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, the excitement of summer is upon us!

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we understand that summer is a time for fun, relaxation and enjoying the outdoors. Whether you're planning beach trips, backyard barbecues or simply soaking up the sun, we want to ensure that your summer is as healthy and safe as it is enjoyable.

Here are some recommendations to keep you and your loved ones healthy all season long.

Sunscreen First! Sunscreen- Summer story.jpg

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is crucial, especially during summer. Here’s how you can do it effectively:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen: Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and make sure it's broad-spectrum to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Apply sunscreen often: Apply 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.
  • Seek shade during peak hours: The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to stay in the shade during these times to reduce your risk of skin damage.

Stay Hydrated Stay Hydrated- Summer story.jpg

The summer heat increases the risk of dehydration, so use these tips to stay well-hydrated:

  • Drink plenty of water: Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, more if you're active or spending extended time in the sun.
  • Incorporate hydrating foods: Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber and strawberries are not only refreshing but also help maintain hydration.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy these fresh, nutritious foods that boost your health:

  • Fruits and vegetables: Take advantage of summer’s bounty with refreshing fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  • Grill smart: If you’re grilling, choose lean meats and plenty of vegetables. Avoid charring food, as this can create harmful compounds.

Prioritize Mental and Physical Well-being Mindfulness- Summer Story.jpg

Summer is not just about physical health but also about taking care of your mental well-being:

  • Stay active: Engage in outdoor activities like walking, cycling or swimming.
  • Practice mindfulness: Take time to relax and unwind. Whether it’s through yoga, meditation or simply sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine, make sure to balance activity with rest.

Preventive care is a cornerstone of our mission at Moffitt. We encourage you to share these health tips with your friends and family for a safe, healthy and joyful summer season.
