Program Description

The Head and Neck Oncology Fellowship, created under the auspices of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), is an educational opportunity provided by the Department of Head and Neck - Endocrine Oncology and is based at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (Moffitt Cancer Center) located in Tampa, Florida. 

The program is designed to give the participant a wide range of expertise in head and neck oncologic surgery, head and neck microvascular reconstruction, and endocrine surgery. Major components include head and neck ablative surgery, endocrine surgery (including parathyroid experience), skull base procedures, and major reconstruction using microvascular techniques. We emphasize educating our trainees on the collaborative approach to patient care combining the disciplines of Head and Neck Surgery, Endocrinology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiology, Pathology and others. Both clinical and basic science research opportunities are also available. 

Research

The fellow will be encouraged to participate in the Head and Neck - Endocrine Oncology research. The fellow will be expected to become involved in one or more of the ongoing research protocols active within the department, and to present at one or more regional or national meetings. In addition, the fellow will be expected to publish at least one research manuscript during the one-year program. The fellow will be encouraged and supported to pursue additional projects as well.

Eligibility

The Department of Head and Neck - Endocrine Oncology offers a one-year clinical fellowship training program for physicians who have completed a residency in Otolaryngology, General Surgery or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and who have passed or are eligible for the American Board of Otolaryngology, American Board of Surgery, or their respective certification examinations. The fellowship is designed to expose the candidate to a comprehensive head and neck and endocrine surgical experience with the goal of preparing the individual for a career in academic medicine. Fellows will be appointed as junior attendings at the Clinical Instructor level. Salary is scaled at the appropriate PGY level.

Interviews are held in the spring time frame and the match results are sent out to the programs in mid-June with the fellowship beginning July of the following year.

The Head and Neck Oncology Fellowship at Moffitt participates in the AHNS Head and Neck Fellowship Match Program. Application requirements include a completed Head and Neck Fellowship application, CV, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and the USMLE board score report.
