Bone marrow transplantation is a promising treatment option for certain patients who have been diagnosed with a hematological condition, such as leukemialymphomamultiple myeloma, aplastic anemia and some solid tumors. A transplant can replace bone marrow that was destroyed by disease, chemotherapy or radiation treatment with healthy and fully functional bone marrow.

Moffitt Cancer Center is proud to be home to Florida’s leading blood and marrow transplant program, the largest and most active of its kind in the southeastern United States. Our physicians perform more than 400 transplants per year, making Moffitt one of the highest-volume transplant centers in the nation. We are also one of only a few centers that offer transplantation options to adults 70 and older.

At Moffitt, we understand that bone marrow transplant success rates are a key consideration for patients making treatment decisions. Due in part to our extensive experience and high level of specialization, we consistently achieve exceptional patient outcomes with overall survival rates of up to four times the national average.

Our transplant options

Moffitt offers two main types of bone marrow transplantation:

Autologous bone marrow transplants

In this type of procedure, the patient is their own donor. Healthy stem cells are taken from the patient by bone marrow harvest or apheresis, then frozen and stored. After the patient receives intensive chemotherapy or radiation treatment, the frozen stem cells are thawed and given back.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplants

The patient receives stem cells from a genetically matched donor who is found through a national bone marrow registry. Healthy stem cells are taken from the donor by bone marrow harvest or apheresis, then delivered to the patient. For 2018-2020, Moffitt’s one-year allogeneic transplant survival rate exceeded the expected rate for bone marrow transplants in the U.S. (78.0% vs. 73.7%).

Our supportive care services

In addition to bone marrow transplant success rates, there are other important factors for patients to consider when making treatment decisions, such as the availability of supportive care services. Moffitt takes an integrated approach to bone marrow transplantation, and our supportive care specialists work closely with each patient before, during and after a transplant to help ensure the best possible outcome and quality of life. We offer:

  • Identification of unrelated donors
  • Medical management of post-transplant complications, such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)
  • Dietary counseling
  • Specialty pharmacy services

Our nationally recognized expertise

As a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moffitt is nationally recognized for our commitment to advancing cancer treatment through research and innovation. Out of 175 bone marrow transplant centers in the U.S., we are one of 11 that consistently outrank the national averages in terms of patient outcomes.

If you are considering a bone marrow transplant, success rates are one piece of information that can help you make your decision. But it is important to keep in mind that outcomes do not tell the whole story. No two patients or cancers are exactly alike, and no one can predict with certainty how your body and cancer will respond to bone marrow transplantation. As always, your best source of medical information is your physician, who is familiar with your unique circumstances and can put the outcome data into the proper context for you.
