Cardio-Oncology

Moffitt Cancer Center's Cardio-Oncology Program helps patients monitor and manage the cardiovascular side effects of cancer treatment, as well as pre-existing cardiovascular conditions that might complicate a patient’s diagnosis. We are the first such academic program in the region, bringing together the expertise of researchers and oncologists from Moffitt and expert cardiologists from USF Health.

Our Cardio-Oncology Program welcomes any patient actively receiving cancer therapy, as well as survivors who have completed treatment. Certain therapies may lead to cardiovascular complications, which may occur long after the cancer treatments have ended.

An evaluation by the cardio-oncology team may help to prevent both short- and long-term cardiovascular side effects allowing for the safe and successful completion of cancer therapy while maintaining long-term cardiovascular health. Our focus is not only to treat cardiovascular complications, but also to prevent cardiovascular side effects. Patients with a cardiac history are encouraged to consider a cardio-oncology consultation prior to beginning potentially cardio-toxic therapies.  

Our Approach

Our multi-specialty approach brings together cardiologists and oncologists in a single convenient location, allowing patients to seamlessly consult with numerous experts in the field. We offer a variety of services, including: 

• Establishment of baseline cardiovascular risk for patients preparing to begin cancer treatment, especially therapies which are known to have cardio-toxic side effects
• Screening for new or progressive cardiovascular side effects (via state-of-the-art technologies, such as 3D echocardiography systems)
• Assessment and treatment of cardiovascular complications, such as heart failure, vascular disease and hypertension
• Cardiovascular evaluations for patients to determine their candidacy for certain surgeries, clinical trials or procedures like a cardioversion
• Access to a multi-specialty clinic for non-Moffitt patients who may benefit from a collaborative consultation with a cardiologist and oncologist 

We are also heavily involved in cardio-oncology research, with a shifting focus from managing existing conditions to preventing future ones. Current investigations include medications to help minimize the cardiotoxic effects of certain chemotherapy drugs, more targeted radiation therapy techniques to minimize healthy tissue damage and the role of holistic options, such as diet and nutrition, in a cancer patient’s cardiovascular health.
