Radiology technologists play a vital role in cancer care. Also known as radiographers or even rad techs, these medical specialists perform important imaging tests on patients to create detailed images of targeted areas of the body. The images are then interpreted by a physician, who may use the results to help detect and diagnose a tumor, determine the best treatment plan or monitor the patient’s response to cancer therapy.

What does a rad tech do?

Radiology technologists may:

Plan and prepare for imaging procedures

This may include:

• Coordinating patient schedules and workflows
• Maintaining and organizing imaging supplies for day-to-day functions

Interact with patients

This may include:

• Welcoming patients, answering their questions and helping them feel informed, comfortable and confident about their upcoming imaging tests
• Explaining the imaging process in patient-friendly terms, including what to expect and any possible side effects
• Recording patient history information and appropriate clinical data to aid physicians in the diagnostic process

Set up imaging equipment

This may include:

• Preparing and calibrating imaging equipment and following any applicable quality assurance guidelines
• Verifying and double-checking the imaging parameters for each test

Facilitate imaging tests

This may include:

• Escorting patients into the procedure room and positioning them properly for imaging examinations
• Operating imaging equipment to independently perform (or assist a licensed practitioner in performing) imaging procedures such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, ultrasounds and mammograms
• Monitoring patients and attending to their needs during imaging tests
• Maintaining accurate records of the imaging procedures performed and documenting any observations and patient reactions
• Understanding and applying proper billing charge codes for imaging tests

Perform quality assurance

This may include:

• Conducting routine quality assurance checks on imaging equipment to help ensure optimal functionality
• Addressing any technical issues or adjustments needed for imaging accuracy

Participate in continuing education

This may include:

• Engaging in continuous learning to stay current with evolving imaging techniques and technologies 
• Maintaining and applying up-to-date knowledge of radiation protection and safety practices
