The teams at Moffitt Cancer Center, including Interventional Radiology and Endocrinology, leverage their extensive experience in tumor ablation to address benign thyroid nodules using radiofrequency ablation (RFA). This technique offers patients a scarless alternative to surgery, if desired. Our dedicated thyroid RFA device enhances our thyroid ablation program, with both our medical team and treated patients expressing high satisfaction with the outcomes.

Utilizing ultrasound guidance, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) employs a minimally invasive technique. It involves inserting a specialized needle, known as the RFA probe, into the specific tissue. The probe generates heat at its tip through the delivery of alternating current, selectively cauterizing the thyroid nodule. Over several months, the body's immune system gradually removes the cauterized tissue, resulting in the gradual shrinkage of the nodule.

Presently, this treatment is available for biopsy-proven benign thyroid nodules. It's recommended for patients experiencing symptoms or cosmetic concerns directly attributable to the nodule or for toxic nodules.

Advantages of Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation

  • Preserves healthy thyroid tissue, eliminating the need for hormone replacement therapy
  • Minimally invasive procedure conducted under local anesthesia
  • Outpatient procedure, allowing for convenience
  • Shorter recovery periods
  • No scarring post-procedure
  • Low risk of complications
  • Enhanced quality of life
