Because the early detection of cancer is so strongly correlated with positive outcomes and enhanced quality of life, there are several symptoms that every female should be mindful of. That’s not to say that women should be perpetually worried about a cancer diagnosis; many of these symptoms can be caused by normal hormonal fluctuations, stress, minor infections or other noncancerous conditions. However, it’s important to be aware of these potential warning signs and to discuss them with a medical professional if they do not go away on their own within a few weeks.

Female-specific cancers include cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine (endometrial) cancer, vaginal cancer and vulvar cancer. Each of these conditions has its own distinct set of symptoms, although several overlap. The most common female cancer symptoms include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (bleeding – light or heavy – that occurs outside of a normal menstrual period or after menopause)
  • Vaginal discharge that contains blood
  • Pain (either severe and sharp or dull and throbbing) in the pelvis or stomach
  • Bloating in the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss and/or loss of appetite
  • Constant fatigue
  • A more frequent or more urgent need to use the restroom
  • Persistent indigestion, constipation or nausea
  • Changes in the appearance of the vagina (e.g., the development of a rash or unexplained sores)
  • Itching, burning, pain or tenderness during urination or sexual intercourse

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we can evaluate any cancer symptoms that our female patients experience and – when appropriate – perform diagnostic testing for a comprehensive range of cancers. Our programs for gynecologic cancers incorporate a variety of diagnostic services, as well as genetic counseling and screening services, treatments and supportive care services. We’re a trusted destination for women who are seeking a diagnosis or second opinion, as well as women who have a confirmed diagnosis and are ready to explore their treatment options.
