Bone Marrow Transplant Procedure for Hematological Cancers
A bone marrow transplant is a common procedure for the treatment of hematological cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma. Hematological cancers develop when the body’s bone marrow produces abnormal red or white blood cells or platelets, which can potentially become cancerous. These cancerous cells grow uncontrollably and aren’t able to perform their intended functions, such as fighting off infection or controlling bleeding. Sometimes, replacing the patient’s diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow can help restore the body’s ability to produce properly functioning blood cells in the appropriate quantities.
Bone marrow transplants can be performed using marrow from a donor (an allogenic transplant) or from a patient’s own body (an autologous transplant). Before a bone marrow transplant procedure is performed, a patient will typically receive a high-dose course of chemotherapy or radiation therapy to destroy the existing bone marrow and make the body more receptive to the transplanted cells. Because this pre-transplant therapy can be intense, it’s important for a patient to work with a multispecialty team that can not only provide skilled transplant services, but also offer supportive care to ease the side effects of pre-transplant treatment.
