Your Radiology Specialists
Radiology is the medical specialty that uses medical imaging for diagnosis and treatment. Radiologists are physicians who have specialized training in medical imaging. Imaging plays a vital role in the detection, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of many types of cancer. Some imaging tests, like screening mammography, can be used for early cancer detection, so that if can be treated before it can spread. Imaging can be used to diagnose tumors, guide biopsies for cancer diagnosis as well as for monitor cancer treatment. Interventional radiology specialists perform minimally invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat cancers and to palliate cancer-related complications.
Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology at Moffitt
At Moffitt Cancer Center, board-certified radiology and interventional radiology physicians are valuable members of our multispecialty team. Our radiologists participate in the care of our patients through imaging, including interpreting imaging examinations, performing image-guided procedures and serving as members of multidisciplinary tumor boards. Our radiology faculty providers have sub-specialty training for additional expertise. For example, breast imaging exams performed at Moffitt are interpreted by radiologists with fellowship training in breast imaging, and brain MRIs are interpreted by radiologists with fellowship training in brain and spine imaging. Also excelling in translational research, our radiology specialists utilize state-of-the-art technology to continually advance evidence-based practices, bringing us one step closer to a cure every day.
Our Imaging Services & Imaging Team
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology provides the full range of medical imaging at multiple locations to serve our patients. Imaging tests are performed by licensed imaging technologists under the supervision of our radiologists, and the examinations are interpreted by our board-certified specialists.
Imaging tests include:
- Computed tomography (CT) scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
- Nuclear medicine scans to include SPECT/CT imaging
- Positron emission tomography (PET/CT) scans
- 3D screening and diagnostic mammography (
- Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) bone density scans
- Low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening
Our Interventional Radiology Services
The interventional radiology team includes specialty-trained radiology technologists, nurses and fellowship-trained interventional radiologists. Our procedure suites are equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and surgical devices which enable us to provide a wide range of minimally invasive procedures to our cancer patients.
Image-guided procedures include:
- Biopsy and abscess drainages
- Angiogram and vascular stenting
- Placement of venous access devices (chest ports, tunneled venous lines)
- Feeding tube placement
- Biliary and urinary interventions
- Chemoembolization and Radioembolization of tumors
- Cryoablation and Microwave ablation of tumors
- Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty of spine fractures
Our unparalleled expertise
Moffitt is a high-volume cancer center, which means our radiology specialists have opportunities to contribute to numerous cancer imaging studies involving a wide range of technologies. Because these experts are involved in reviewing a large number of imaging studies and performing many interventional and therapeutic techniques, they have acquired extensive expertise in addressing all types of cancer. As a result, we are able to help each patient achieve the best possible outcome and quality of life.
