Diagnostic imaging is a critical part of the diagnostic process. Imaging scans allow oncologists to determine if cancer might be present, even if a tumor is still in its earliest stages. If a patient’s imaging results indicate something unusual, additional testing (such as a biopsy) can then be ordered.
At Moffitt Cancer Center, we offer a variety of superior diagnostic imaging services in a single convenient location. From basic digital radiography to advanced modalities that can detect even the smallest abnormalities, we offer the latest technologies for tumor detection and staging. As a result, we have the ability to detect even the rarest cancers in their earliest stages, a key step in improving patient outcomes. Our Imaging Services Program is equipped to provide the following diagnostic imaging procedures:
- Computed tomography (CT) scans
- Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Computerized/digital radiography (X-ray)
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scans
- Breast imaging (digital mammographies, breast ultrasounds and breast MRIs)
- Image-guided biopsies
- Ultrasounds (ultrasonographies)
- Nuclear medicine
- Vascular and nonvascular interventional radiology services
Depending on the situation, two or more of these diagnostic imaging techniques may be performed at the same time. For instance, patients may receive PET/CT scans or SPECT/CT scans. A multispecialty team of oncologists, nurses, radiologists and technologists will assess each patient’s unique situation to determine the most appropriate options.
Our radiologists are board-certified by the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, and are also fellowship-trained in a specialty such as breast imaging, nuclear medicine, body imaging or interventional radiology. Our interventional radiologists specialize in using X-rays, CT scans and MRIs to perform minimally invasive treatments for a wide range of cancers.
