Using Math to Fight Cancer

March 29, 2017

How does math coincide with cancer treatment?

The answer lies within the Integrated Mathematical Oncology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center.

“We’re trying to use mathematical models to predict how a tumor grows and spreads in a patient and how that tumor would respond to treatments,” says Dr. Alexander Anderson, chair of the department.

Using the theory of evolution, Dr. Anderson and his team use math formulas to determine the best course of treatment that allows a patient to control cancer, which leads to a higher quality of life and often fewer medical costs.

“You know mathematics classically has a bad rap as being something that’s not applicable to the real world, but the reality is that mathematics is the language of life,” says Dr. Anderson.
