June 26, 2017

Marsha Smith-Hill, Salute to SurvivorsMarsha Smith-Hill, a breast cancer survivor, had a quite a memorable time at the Rays-Orioles game on Saturday. Not only did she throw out the first pitch as the Salute to Survivors honoree, her brother Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith was on hand to surprise her.

"I’m proud of her as a brother and more proud of her for the way she fought through cancer and to make it back to where she’s at right now. So I’m pretty stoked," said Smith, a former Gator and Cowboy football star.

Smith-Hill has been in remission for five years after undergoing a double mastectomy and receiving treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center.

"Cancer claimed me, I didn’t claim cancer," said Smith-Hill. "So I told cancer you have a hell of a fight on your hands. I’m not going down that easy. And I fought a good fight and I continue to this day to help other patients who go through this journey."

Each month during the Rays regular season, the team honors a current or former Moffitt patient for the courage they’ve endured during their cancer journey in a "Salute to Survivors" game.
