It’s that time of year when many people are making New Year’s resolutions and Stephanie Carrico, who works in Moffitt’s Direct Referral Center, is among those who are vowing to make changes as we head into 2018. But instead of seeking self-improvement this year, she is helping others.

On New Year’s Day, Carrico, her husband and four children handed out blankets, clothing and non-perishable boxed meals to the homeless as the temperatures dropped almost to freezing.

As they set out on their New Year’s Day mission, they saw people without shoes or socks digging in dumpsters searching for food. Carrico says it’s an opportunity to remind her children to always stay humble and remind them that you never truly know what someone else is experiencing at the moment.

During the first week of the New Year, the Carricos also made a large batch of chicken noodle soup and took it to a shelter, so residents would have a warm meal on a chilly night. She believes helping the less fortunate is a good New Year’s resolution for her entire family. They plan on helping the less fortunate as the temperature rises.
