When Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin slows down long enough, you might notice a distinctive "M" on his custom cleats designed for a great cause. The two-time Pro Bowler chose to sport the Moffitt logo as part of the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats initiative, which allows players to spotlight their favorite charitable causes through customized footwear on the field.
"Several women in my family have been diagnosed with cancer," says Martin, "and I’ve seen the effects firsthand." Wearing the Moffitt logo along with the names of his loved ones on his cleats empowers Martin to support those who are battling this disease and bring awareness to an organization that helps many in their fight.
On "Giving Tuesday," players began sharing images of their cleats and the stories behind them through social media using the hashtag #MyCauseMyCleats. Martin revealed his custom design with a Twitter shout-out: “Honoring my beloved grandma while raising awareness to further more research through the organization Moffitt Cancer Center.”
Now in its second year, My Cause My Cleats allows more than 500 NFL players to showcase their causes on-field during games. Following the NFL’s week 13 games, many of the cleats will be auctioned on a dedicated website, with all proceeds going to the player’s respective charity of choice.
Thanks, Doug – and Go Bucs!
