    Research

Dr. Haley's research focuses primarily on the role that family caregivers play in helping older adults with a variety of chronic conditions, including cancer. This research also examines the psychological, social, and health consequences of family caregiving, including the long-term effects experienced by family members after the death of their relative. Dr. Haley also is interested in the development and evaluation of interventions for family caregivers. He has a related interest in the ways that older adults cope with chronic illness, including cancer. Dr. Haley has studied family caregivers of older terminally ill patients with cancer and dementia in the hospice setting. In this work, he and his colleagues have examined the similarities and differences between the experiences of cancer caregiving and dementia caregiving during their end stages. The results of this research show that, despite very different courses and daily stresses, the impacts on the family caregiver are quite similar. Both groups of spouse caregivers show serious depressive symptoms and physical health complaints, far in excess of those reported by noncaregiving control groups. Research on the predictors of caregiver well-being demonstrates the utility of a stress process model of family caregiving. Patient impairments or diagnosis are not strong predictors of caregiver depression or life satisfaction, while caregiver appraisals and social supports are significant predictors. The research suggests that caregivers could benefit from stress management interventions that have been widely implemented with caregivers of older adults with dementia. In an ongoing study, Dr. Haley and his colleagues are examining stress, coping, and adaptation among older women who are breast cancer survivors. Data from this project are currently being analyzed. In other collaborative studies, Dr. Haley has studied the decision-making process among patients and families facing terminal cancer. The results indicate that family members are vital in making this decision; they also identified predictors of the choice of hospice versus conventional care for terminally ill cancer patients. Dr. Haley has written a number of review articles describing the current research literature on family caregiving, aging, and cancer. These articles articulate gaps in the current research literature. His research on hospice and end-of-life issues has led to work articulating the potential role of psychology in end-of-life care. Finally, a number of articles on aging and cancer have resulted from his collaborations with Drs. Balducci and Extermann in the Senior Adult Oncology Program. Dr. Haley also has considerable ongoing research on family caregiving for patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. This research is highly relevant to the study of family caregiving in cancer, because both their findings and methodologies provide a model that can be useful for cancer research. He and his colleagues have published research demonstrating the value of family caregiver intervention across diverse racial/ethic groups, and have articulated methods for outreach to minority patients and families. They also have conducted research on the long-term benefits of caregiver intervention, showing that comprehensive caregiver intervention has sustained benefits that improve depression and caregiver appraisal for 3 years after randomization.
