Couple cooking nutritious food

When having surgery, proper nutrition from a balanced diet helps with healing, recovery and maintaining strength before and after the procedure.

Each day, your diet should include five or more servings of fruits and vegetables, protein at every meal, plenty of whole grains and two to three servings of dairy products. Eating this way will ensure that your body is getting the protein, energy, vitamins and minerals to rebuild tissue and prevent infection.

Foods high in protein are especially important for healing, repair of tissues and healthy immune function. Poor nutrition can weaken the immune system causing delays in the healing process and a decrease in the ability of the body to fight infection.
