Moffitt Cancer Center: Puerto Rico BMT Clinic

There are nearly 800 adults diagnosed in Puerto Rico with blood related cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma each year.

Moffitt opened a Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Evaluation and Follow-Up Clinic at the Metro Medical Center in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, in 2011. Dr. Melissa Alsina, head of Moffitt's Multiple Myeloma Program and associate member in the Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Immunotherapy Program, is a native Puerto Rican who travels to the island every other month. Dr. José Ochoa-Bayona, a medical oncologist, alternates with Dr. Alsina. Both physicians treat patients who have been referred by a physician as candidates for a blood and marrow transplant.
