WHO:             Moffitt Cancer Center and USF Health will co-host the fourth Global Cardio-Oncology Summit alongside the International Cardio-Oncology Society, the Canadian Cardiac Oncology Network and the British Cardio-Oncology Society.

WHAT:           Nearly 30 percent of patients with cancer will experience some form of cardiovascular complications. This may be the development of new problems as a result of their cancer treatments or the exacerbation of underlying disease. The field of cardio-oncology is still relatively young but has seen explosive growth and interest over the past several years.

This year’s summit is co-chaired by Moffitt and USF Health cardiologist Michael Fradley and medical oncologist Roohi Ismail-Khan. Previous conferences have been held in London, Vancouver and Nashville. This year, more than 320 participants from 23 countries are expected to attend in Tampa.

The summit models a leading-edge interdisciplinary approach to preventative and targeted medicine in cardio-oncology. This important field of study, aimed at understanding cardiac complications of oncology treatments, has gained a growing interest from a number of health care providers including oncologists, cardiologists, radiologists, nurses, pharmacists and basic scientists.

The Global Cardio-Oncology Summit will feature the latest research and clinical guidelines in the multidisciplinary field of cardio-oncology. In addition to sessions on the prevention, management and treatment of cardiac complications related to oncology therapy given by world experts in cardio-oncology, the summit also features 100-plus poster presentations of cutting-edge research in cardio-oncology.
