WHO: Moffitt Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, and Swim Across America will celebrate the success of the two organizations’ six-year relationship, which has raised close to $1 million for research at Moffitt. Recent gifts have enabled researchers to generate an additional $2 million for funding research.

WHAT: With the presentation of this year’s check totaling $180,711, Swim Across America Tampa Bay will have raised close to $1 million over the last six years to benefit Moffitt’s melanoma, sarcoma and adolescent and young adult programs.

Scheduled to speak are Swim Across America’s Rob Butcher, Chief Executive Officer, President of the Moffitt Foundation Matt Kupec, and Moffitt cutaneous oncology experts Shari Pilon-Thomas, Ph.D.., Amod Sarniak, M.D., and Damon Reed, M.D.

“Our partnership with Swim Across America has been invaluable as we continue to combat this terrible disease,” says Kupec. “We are appreciative of the swimmers, the volunteers and to the sponsors who help make this fundraising event a success. We look forward to the 2018 swim and local pool swims. Each dollar raised continues to move our mission forward – preventing and, hopefully one day, curing cancer.”

Following the presentation, Dr. Shari Pilon-Thomas will provide a tour to attendees and the media of which provides a view of the labs benefiting from Swim Across America’s efforts.

The 2017 event raised $231,968, which brings the total from the past six years to $977,711 to benefit Moffitt's Melanoma, Sarcoma and Adolescent and Young Adult programs.
