Moffitt Cancer Center Hosts 2nd Annual Moffitt Healthy KIDZ Hug a Science Teacher Event

February 08, 2017

WHO: Moffitt Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, will host an event through its Moffitt Healthy KIDZ Program.

WHAT: The Moffitt Healthy KIDZ Program offers innovative health education for elementary and middle school students guided by the philosophy that prevention starts early. Moffitt Healthy KIDZ teaches students about the importance of healthy nutrition, exercise and the dangers of smoking.

Moffitt Healthy KIDZ will host more than 40 Hillsborough County science teachers grades 6-12, county administrators and representatives from the Museum of Science and Industry, giving the educators an opportunity to see firsthand inside Moffitt’s world-class center.

The Hug a Science Teacher event will kick off with Nikki Ross-Inda, community relations coordinator at Moffitt, and Larry Plank, director of K-12 STEM Education with Hillsborough County Public Schools. Heiko Enderling, Ph.D., will discuss “Mathematics in Oncology,” and teachers will get hands on with an interactive MOSI display and conversation about healthy lifestyle in education.

Other activities include an Arts In Medicine project, yoga demonstration, and presentations on breast and skin cancer, closing the event with a virtual tour of the McKinley campus.

Through this partnership, Moffitt plans to expose and develop future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers with young students.

Lunch will be provided.

WHEN: Monday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
