April 10, 2017

TAMPA, Fla. — You have cancer. Now what? Moffitt Cancer Center wants to help recently diagnosed patients and their caregivers navigate what lies ahead in a free program May 6 called De Moffitt a Puerto Rico: Charlas sobre cáncer.” This is the 12th event in a series of free cancer education programs presented in Spanish.

Puerto Rico native and hematologist and oncologist Melissa Alsina, M.D., will share coping tips with attendees and answer questions from the audience.

“I am excited to share my knowledge and expertise with the Puerto Rican community where I started my career and continue to have strong ties with,” said Alsina, head of the Multiple Myeloma Transplant Program within Blood and Marrow Transplant at Moffitt. “It is so important to educate this group and address the topic of cancer, a disease that is quite prevalent within our heritage.”

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics, accounting for 22 percent of all cancer-related deaths. At the program, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk one-on-one with one of the top experts from Moffitt, the only Florida-based National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Puerto Rico Advisory Council for Moffitt is hosting the program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, 1309 Ashford Ave., San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Breakfast will be provided. Parking and door prizes are included.
