TAMPA, Fla. Moffitt Cancer Center is proud to announce that Jason B. Fleming, M.D., F.A.C.S., has been appointed as the new Chair of the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology at the cancer center.

Fleming previously worked as a professor with tenure in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There he served as chief of Pancreas Surgery and executive director of Perioperative Services and created the first xenograft program in gastrointestinal cancer.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Fleming to our program and look forward to seeing how he will lead the effort to further advance our discoveries in the field of gastrointestinal oncology,” said G. Douglas Letson, M.D., executive vice president and physician-in-chief at Moffitt.

For more than 15 years, Fleming has instructed and supervised education programs for undergraduates, medical students, postdoctoral research fellows, clinical residents and fellows. He’s received the Castle Connolly Top Doctor award every year since 2013 and recently accepted the President’s Faculty Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2016.

“I’m honored to be joining such an influential institution and am thrilled to guide the team of inspirational doctors who work in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology,” said Fleming.

Fleming will continue his studies to identify the biomarkers of pancreatic cancer and their underlying molecular biology.
