TAMPA, Fla. – John Cleveland, Ph.D. has joined Moffitt Cancer Center as the Associate Center Director of Basic Science. The Basic Science Division looks at the fundamental aspects of cancer genetics, molecular biology, cell and developmental biology and tissue regulation to better understand cancer and how to treat it.
“Dr. Cleveland is an outstanding scientist who brings a record of significant accomplishment in the areas of discovery, leadership, and mentoring with him to Moffitt,” said Thomas A. Cleveland comes to Moffitt from the Scripps Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute- where he served nearly eight years as a professor and chair of the Department of Cancer Biology. Prior to that, he spent more than 17 years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He also completed a fellowship and senior fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.
Cleveland has authored or co-authored more than 190 publications. He currently serves as a member of the Extramural Scientific Advisory Board for the Gastrointestinal SPORE programs at The University of Arizona and the Blood Research Institute of Wisconsin. He has served as editor for numerous scientific journals and has been a long-serving member and Ad-hoc reviewer for National Institutes of Health R01 Grant Program and Project Grant Review Committees.
