2014 PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt Needs Community Support to Help Find a Cure

April 10, 2014

TAMPA, Fla. – Susan Vadaparampil has always wanted to know why so many breast cancer patients at Moffitt Cancer Center were not receiving genetic counseling. As an up-and-coming researcher at Moffitt, she was awarded $25,000 in 2007 from a fundraising event called PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt to help find the answer. It turns out many women don’t understand the importance of genetic counseling and testing. This finding then led to another grant to support a randomized control trial to further her research.

“Every single cent raised during Miles for Moffitt goes to research. My study is just one example of how Miles for Moffitt supports vital cancer research in the Tampa Bay area that can one day find a cure,” explained Vadaparampil, Ph.D., M.P.H.

On Saturday, May 10, an estimated 7,000 people will join together for the 9th annual PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt at the University of South Florida.

Since 2006, Miles for Moffitt has raised nearly $1.5 million and funded 27 researchers and their cancer research programs at Moffitt, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida.

With each mile and every supporter, 100 percent of the money raised through registration and donations funds finding a cure for cancer in the Tampa Bay area. Last year’s race hosted 6,000 people who raised $346,000.

Miles for Moffitt offers an 8K (4.97 miles) Wheelchair, 8K, 5K (3.1 miles), 1-Mile Fun Run and the Run with Raymond Kids Dash.  For those who can’t attend the event, supporters can participate from the comfort of the couch as a virtual runner. Teams from around the world are being built to support cancer research at Moffitt. Online registration ends at midnight May 4, however, registration will be available in person at packet pickup locations and on race day with a $10 increased fee. Participants who register on race morning will not be chip timed.

The Gerdau Survivor Tribute Ceremony will honor all cancer survivors after the event. The post-race food pavilion will include bagels, pastries, bananas, smoothies, breakfast muffins, and apples, and awards will be given to the top three male and female age-group participants.

This year’s Miles for Moffitt sponsors include our title sponsor, PNC Bank, as well as the Tampa Bay Rays, Pat and Rich McCrea, Tampa Bay Times, WTSP 10 News, Clear Channel Outdoor, CBS Radio, AAA the Auto Club Group, Bill and Karen Dalton, Connie and Priscilla Mack, C-K’s Produce, Admac and Caspers, Univision, Telemundo WRMD, Waste Management, Integral Quality Care, CURS RVs, Amgen, Nestle and Zephyrhills Water, Peak 10 Inc., Panera Bread, Corporate Caterers and AVI SPL.
