TAMPA, Fla. –Moffitt Cancer Center is recruiting healthy volunteers and breast cancer patients to participate in a study to determine the effects of chemotherapy on the brain. Chemotherapy is routinely used to treat many cancers. Unfortunately, chemotherapy has a number of side effects including hair loss, nausea, and fatigue.
A growing body of evidence also suggests that chemotherapy may cause subtle, but long-term changes in a patient’s thinking, also known as “chemo brain.” These changes often take the form of difficulty remembering recent events or performing more than one task at a time. Since a large number of mental abilities decrease with age, chemotherapy may have a greater impact on older, rather than younger patients. However, most of the research in this area to date has focused on younger cancer patients.
To address this gap in knowledge, researchers at Moffitt, in collaboration with Georgetown University, are conducting a study. The Thinking & Living with Cancer (TLC) study evaluates two groups – older women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and a comparison group of older women who do not have cancer.
The study needs volunteers for the comparison group and is seeking women age 60 or older with no history of cancer. Participants are required to give a saliva sample and agree to meet with researchers three times over the next two years to complete a series of questionnaires and memory tests. The women will be compensated $50 for each of the three visits. Those who are interested in participating can call 813-745-8245 or email TLCstudy@moffitt.org.
The study is supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute.
