TAMPA, Fla. – One in two men and one in three women will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, and 100,000 will be diagnosed in Florida this year. Moffitt Cancer Center and the Center for Building Hope in Sarasota are partnering to provide free professionally led cancer support programs for patients and caregivers at Moffitt facilities. With advances in prevention, detection and treatment, the goal is to assist the growing survivor population.
Moffitt is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida. It boasts fellowship-trained physicians and researchers, and treats more than 51,000 patients a year with survivorship rates above the national average. Moffitt’s cancer and cancer-only focus dovetails with the Center for Building Hope’s goal to enhance all aspects of cancer survivorship.
“This collaboration brings together two world-class providers of mind/body cancer support in our region, one a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of cancer and the other a leader in information, education and programs supporting those undergoing cancer treatment,” said G. Douglas Letson, M.D., executive vice president and physician-in-chief of Moffitt. “Together, they will offer the state-of-the-art medical and psychosocial services to enhance patients’ well-being and chances for recovery.”
The free programs will include networking groups tailored to specific cancers, nutrition programs, exercise classes, and educational workshops with physicians and experts. Participants will learn how to make better health choices, regain control over their daily lives and reduce anxiety.
“This affiliation will offer education, training and research opportunities that will provide a bridge from diagnosis to recovery,” said Andrea Feldmar, program director at Center for Building Hope. “The mind and body work together to impact our overall health and our ability to recover from disease. This simple principle underlies all our efforts to bring the highest-quality support to thousands of people touched by cancer.”
