“Laughter Is the Remedy” Offers Dose of Humor at Moffitt Cancer Center

June 12, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – Comedians Tony Esposito and Thomas Brown will headline “Laughter is the Remedy,” a free event hosted by Moffitt Cancer Center that will combine humor, health disparities and cancer education. It will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. July 12 in the Couch Auditorium of the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building, 12902 Magnolia Drive.

Laughter has been shown to be an important part of the healing process. A seven-year research study that tracked 54,000 Norwegians found a survival edge for those with a sense of humor. Of the more than 2,000 people with cancer, those with a sense of humor were 70 percent more likely to survive than those who were less lighthearted.

“When people hear the word cancer, it is no laughing matter. However, we do believe that bringing people together for a fun event can be a great backdrop to provide much needed education about cancer prevention,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., vice president of Moffitt Diversity. “We hope this event will get people talking about the importance of cancer prevention and at the same time provide some laughter to uplift and inspire.”

“Laughter is the Remedy” will feature Esposito, a headliner for Carnival Cruise Lines who has worked with Louis Anderson and Billy Gardell. Tampa native Brown was voted AOL’s “Best Cruise Line Comedian” and has worked with Jeff Foxworthy.

Moffitt experts will lead an interactive educational discussion on health disparities, cancer prevention and screenings. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and The Caribbean Crew will provide live entertainment.

This event is for those 21 and older. Seating is limited. Register for the free event at http://bit.ly/laughteristheremedy
