TAMPA, Fla. —The recent arrival of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., (NYSE: PNC) in Central West Florida is impacting more than the financial community. The 2010 Bank of the Year and soon to be the nation’s fifth-largest in number of branches is helping make a difference in Moffitt Cancer Center’s fight against cancer —by sponsoring the Seventh Annual Miles for Moffitt Race.
According to Miles for Moffitt officials, this high-profile, annual fundraising event, which helps support life-saving cancer research at Moffitt, will be called PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt.
The event, being held May 12 at the USF Sun Dome, has raised more than $800,000 since its founding in 2006. With 6,000 participants expected in 2012, the PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt race is likely to reach the million-dollar mark in aggregate contributions.
The decision by the PNC Foundation and PNC Bank to take a major role in this race helps fulfill PNC’s commitment to strengthening and enriching the communities it serves, said Joe Meterchick, PNC regional president of Central West Florida.
“There is a correlation between the health of individuals and the economic health of a community,” Meterchick said. “We consider Moffitt and the world-class scientific research and patient care taking place on its campus to be a community asset well worth our commitment.”
Karen Dalton, founder of Miles for Moffitt, said major support from an organization such as PNC Bank, which is new to our community, “speaks volumes about the bank’s long-term commitment to this region, including its desire to help reinforce Moffitt’s long-established mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.”
“Moffitt’s value comes not only from its contribution to improving the lives of Tampa Bay residents, but also the lives of individuals and families throughout Florida,” Meterchick said. “Through our support, we seek to impact positively their future.”
With the help of PNC Bank and other major sponsors, the 2012 PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt could be a banner year for the race, Dalton said. “We expect 2012 will take us to the million-dollar milestone in combined funds raised for Moffitt cancer research since the race began.”
Sponsors allow 100 percent of race entry fees to support Moffitt’s cancer research programs. Other sponsors include the Tampa Bay Rays as Presenting Sponsor, Gerdau as Survivor Celebration Sponsor, University of South Florida, Amgen Breakaway From Cancer, The Berkman Family Foundation, Greenberg Traurig and Embassy Suites. Media sponsors include 10 News, Tampa Bay Times, Mix 100.7 and US 103.5.
