TAMPA, Fla. —A free day of education and support for cancer caregivers is being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28 at the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building at Moffitt Cancer Center, 12902 Magnolia Drive. The program includes sessions and accommodations for Spanish-speaking attendees.
“Caring for the Caregiver,” open to anyone caring for a cancer patient, will be presented by Moffitt staff, including clinical social workers, nurse practitioners and registered dietitians.
Keynote speaker is Bryan A. Bognar, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., program leader of Internal and Hospital Medicine at Moffitt. Bognar, who also leads Moffitt’s Psychosocial & Palliative Care Program, will present “Caregiver Health and Warning Signs of Distress.”
“A cancer diagnosis changes the lives of cancer patients and often the loved ones who care for them,” said Bognar, who sees in his medical practice firsthand the effect cancer treatment can have on caregivers. “Much of a patient’s care may depend on the welfare of the person sitting right next to them. If the caregiver is in trouble, the patient may be in trouble.”
The program is designed to provide caregivers with ways to cope with the stressors of caring for a cancer patient while taking care of themselves. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences during the program and learn from one another.
Breakout sessions will include presentations by Arts In Medicine, Pastoral Care, and Integrative Medicine for yoga and massage. Topics will cover nutrition, stress management, impact of cancer on the family, and the emotional impact of caregiving. Light breakfast and lunch are included.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. April 28. Reservations are needed by April 23. Please call 1-888-MOFFITT (1-888-663-3488). Call (813) 745-8407 for information about the conference and breakout sessions.
