Training Clinic To Get You Up To Speed for Miles for Moffitt Races

February 18, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. — The 2011 Florida Bank Miles for Moffitt — which offers five-mile, 5K and one-mile races — is set for May 14 at the University of South Florida. If you need a little help getting ready to pound the pavement, the Miles for Moffitt training clinic is for you.

Just ask Lisa Shepherd. She was in her 20s when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and underwent a hysterectomy. Today, at age 58, she’s a Moffitt employee who lives and breathes the mission: to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. She’s committed to participating in Miles for Moffitt, but because she’s “not a runner,” she’s already registered for this year’s training clinic.

“I want to do all I can to promote Moffitt,” Shepherd says. “Walking is something I can do, and it’s something I can encourage my friends and co-workers to do. It’s a chance for me to be able to give back a part of myself to help raise funds for Moffitt.”

Lynn Gray, a Road Runners Club of America-certified coach, will lead the eight-week Miles for Moffitt training clinic. The weekly sessions are designed to prepare participants for the race and to promote wellness. They will include warm-up exercises, fitness walks and runs led by experienced trainers. Each week, sessions will include wellness topics to help families prepare for the runs on May 14. Discussions will include nutrition, therapeutic massage, injury prevention during exercise and selection of proper footwear.

Shepherd, who works in Anatomical Pathology at Moffitt, is harnessing her love of walking to prepare for the Miles for Moffitt. With help from the training clinic, Shepherd’s goal is to finish her first five-mile race. And she hopes to rally her neighbors and friends to support Miles for Moffitt, too. “This race is about giving back to the community, and Moffitt serves not just our local community but worldwide,” Shepherd says. “Just coming to do Miles for Moffitt, you can potentially help patients around the world.”
