Moffitt Cancer Center Hosts Fourth-Annual Business of Biotech Conference

January 08, 2010

Tampa, FL Moffitt Cancer Center will host its fourth-annual Business of Biotech: Vision + Drive = Innovation conference from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building, 12902 Magnolia Drive.

“We are delighted Dr. Garry Nolan, tenured professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, will be featured as the keynote speaker for our conference,” said conference co-chairman Jarett Rieger, director of the Office of Technology Management and Licensing and associate general counsel. “A principal aim of the conference is to foster a life science cluster in Tampa Bay, and a vital ingredient for the life science cluster is the presence of biotech startups. Nolan will share his experience in forming new biotech companies.”

“This conference started four years ago as a celebration of Moffitt’s 20th anniversary,” said conference co-chairwoman Mary Coffeen, director of Institutional Advocacy at Moffitt. “It has grown to become a true celebration of the biotech industry in Southwest Florida and is a real opportunity for businesses and investors to network and collaborate.”

Venture capitalists, life science companies, angel investors and others will gather to discuss lessons from the front lines of biotechnology. “We’re creating learning opportunities for companies wishing to grow and expand and negotiate this tough market,” Coffeen said. “We have had great participation from leaders in the Tampa Bay area’s economic development arena, and they provided firsthand feedback on what companies are interested in learning.”

Breakout sessions will focus on the following topics:

  • “Roles of the Company Founders,” an inside look at how scientists and managers define their roles and resolve conflicts
  • “Raising Capital in a Sluggish Economy,” a discussion on what it takes to secure capital and strategies for investment
  • “Technology Licensing: Viewpoints from Academia and Industry,” a review of the needs of research and how technology can fill those needs
  • “Exploring the Medical Devices Industry in Tampa Bay,” a look at opportunities for product development and manufacturing in the local area

Partners include Enterprise Florida, Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation, Tampa Bay Partnership, Tampa Bay Technology Forum, BioFlorida and Pinellas County Economic Development. The event is free, but reservations are required because seating is limited.
