Moffitt Cancer Center Named a 2009 Working Mother 100 Best Company by Working Mother Magazine

September 22, 2009

Tampa, FL (Sept. 22, 2009) - Working Mother magazine today named Moffitt Cancer Center one of the 2009 Working Mother 100 Best Companies. From flextime and telecommuting to backup child care and parental leave, Moffitt is responding to tough economic times by taking care of its employees.

Carol Higdon took advantage of Moffitt’s family-friendly programs when she needed help with her 93-year-old mother who fell in the middle of the night and broke her wrist in three places. The elderly woman couldn’t walk and required 24-7 care. “She was so wobbly and I had to provide care for her,” said Higdon, management assistant at Moffitt. “If I took leave, I would have been absent from work with no income.” Through Moffitt’s backup care program, a caregiver bathed her mother, fixed meals and took her to doctor’s appointments. “Moffitt is good,” she said. “It allowed me to return to work because I knew a caregiver was with my mother.”

Even during a recession, the Working Mother 100 Best Companies have found unique, creative ways to offer flexibility that keep employees engaged and dedicated to their work. “We are committed to providing flexible, family-friendly programs that help our employees balance their personal and professional lives,” said Dr. William S. Dalton, Moffitt’s CEO and center director. “The success of programs like School at Work and on-site child care are just a few examples of support to help our team members effectively contribute to our mission to prevent and cure cancer.”

Now in its 24th year, the Working Mother 100 Best Companies program draws attention to the significant contributions working mothers make to industries and the companies that recognize the importance of tapping this essential labor pool.

“Moms are increasingly becoming the sole breadwinners in many households as men lose their jobs at a higher rate than women,” said Suzanne Riss, Editor in Chief, Working Mother magazine. “Now more than ever, our readers and all working mothers need the support of their employers. By offering benefits like paid maternity leave, the ability to work from home and wellness programs, as well as programs that enhance financial well-being, our 100 Best are helping to reduce stress in the busy lives of working moms. These companies epitomize family-friendly support at its best.”

Methodology:

Moffitt was selected for the 2009 Working Mother 100 Best Companies based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions. The application included detailed questions about workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. It also checked the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, benefits, women’s issues and advancement, child care, flexible work, parental leave and company culture. For this year’s 100 Best, particular weight was given to benefits, flexibility and parental leave.
