Free Community Event Led by Moffitt Cancer Center Executive

June 16, 2009

Tallahassee, FL- Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare is pleased to welcome Timothy Yeatman, MD of Moffitt Cancer Center to Tallahassee for a free community health event titled “The Future of Personalized Medicine.”  Dr. Yeatman will discuss how cancer care can become more targeted and more effective by leveraging a new molecular and clinical database.  The program will be held at Premier Health & Fitness Center on Monday, June 22 at 7:15 p.m.

Dr. Timothy Yeatman is Executive Vice President for Translational Research at Moffitt and Chief Scientific Officer of M2Gen, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Moffitt.  He currently serves as Professor of Surgery and Interdisciplinary Oncology and Division Head of Hepatobiliary Division of the GI Tumor Program.  Dr. Yeatman has been appointed to the Directorship of the Total Cancer Care initiative in personalized medicine, a large research project that has the potential to revolutionize the performance of clinical therapeutic trials by leveraging a comprehensive clinical and molecular data repository to deliver personalized cancer care.  The project is in its 3rd year and has accrued ~35,000 patients and their data.  It encompasses patients with cancer and at high risk for cancer, serving as a platform for diagnostic, prognostic, preventative and therapeutic studies.

The Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center has been affiliated with Moffitt since January 2005 and is the only organization within a 200-mile radius of Tallahassee to offer the Total Cancer Care program.  The affiliation with Moffitt further enhances Tallahassee Memorial’s mission to provide comprehensive cancer care to residents of Florida’s Big Bend region. Patients can continue to receive care from Tallahassee Memorial while having access to Moffitt for a broader range of clinical trials, specialized treatments and advanced research and technology. The affiliation also offers opportunities for TMH physicians to participate more easily in continuing professional education and clinical collaboration with Moffitt.
