Baptist Health Care, Moffitt Cancer Center and AAA Auto Club South Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings at Blue Angels Weekend

June 15, 2009

PENSACOLA, Fla.– More than 1 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year, but you don't have to be one of them.

Baptist Health Care is teaming up with Moffitt Cancer Center and AAA Auto Club South during Blue Angels weekend, July 10 and 11, to offer Mole Patrol®,a free skin cancer screening event.

The Mole Patrol® tent will be located by Casino Beach’s Public Safety Building from 8 a.m. to noon. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss sun-exposed areas of concern with on-site oncologists from Mofitt, Baptist Health Care’s affiliate based in Tampa, Fla., and dermatologists from Baptist Health Care. The team will be looking for the two major types of skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma -- both related to sun exposure.

Screening slots are limited and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will be provided with local resources on how to proceed if additional follow-up is needed.

Mole Patrol® celebrates its fourth year of prevention and education during the Blue Angels Weekend. Last year’s team conducted more than 500 screenings. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, but with prevention and education you can save your body’s largest organ from a lifetime of damage.

Moffitt’s Mole Patrol® program travels to venues throughout Florida offering free skin cancer screenings and cancer education to the public. In its 12th year of operation, Mole Patrol® has screened thousands of Floridians, identifying hundreds of suspicious skin lesions that have resulted in the diagnosis of melanoma, basal and squamous cell cancers.

Baptist Health Care’s affiliation with the Moffitt Cancer Center provides oncology patients in northwest Florida and southern Alabama greater access to world-class cancer prevention, new treatment options and the specialized expertise of a research institute.
