Moffitt Researchers Receive $75,000 From Miles For Moffitt Board of Directors

February 29, 2008

Proceeds from annual event helps fund studies in the prevention and cure of cancer

Tampa, FL— The Miles for Moffitt Board of Directors presented $75,000 to three cancer researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center to support their work toward the prevention and cure of cancer.

The $75,000 Milestone Award, which came from proceeds of the 2007 SunTrust Miles for Moffitt event at the University of South Florida, will be shared equally by Jia Fang, Ph.D., Prakash Chinnaiyan, M.D., and Susan T. Vadaparampil, Ph.D

Karen Dalton, founder and chairwoman of the annual event, and Priscilla Mack, race sponsorship chairwoman, presented the award at Moffitt’s 2008 Scientific Retreat on Feb. 22 at the Alfano Conference Center near USF.

The recipients will use the funds to advance research in their areas. Fang is studying how changes at the chromosome level affect cellular function and contribute to the molecular events that underlie cancer and its progression. Chinnaiyan is studying the use of inhibitors of a certain class of protein to increase tumor cell sensitivity to radiation treatment. Vadaparampil is examining the impact of genetic counseling on patients recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

More than 2,200 individuals participated in the 2007 race event. More are expected at the 2008 event, a 5K and one-mile run/walk being held Saturday, May 10, at USF with the Bank of St. Petersburg as title sponsor.

Because the race is underwritten by sponsors, all proceeds from entry fees directly benefit Moffitt’s cancer research programs. “Presenting a check to these talented young researchers is our proudest day,” said Mrs. Dalton, wife of Moffitt CEO William S. Dalton, who joined the presentation along with Jack Pledger, Ph.D., deputy center director and executive vice president/associate center director for basic science at Moffitt.

“These scientists work tirelessly each and every day in support of Moffitt’s mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer,” Mrs. Dalton said. “Supporting them and the many individuals who have experienced cancer is what this race is all about.”
