Moffitt, Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundations Team Up for Golf Tournament

Tampa– Moffitt Cancer Center joins forces with The Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Foundation for the 2008 Celebrity Pro-Am for MDS and cancer research on Feb. 18 at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club, Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor. This is the second year the foundations have teamed up for the golf tournament to raise funds for MDS, a fatal cancer of the bone marrow.

The tournament, which is also open to non-golfers, will follow a VIP gala and pairings party on Feb. 17 at Innisbrook. The evening will include golf pros, celebrities, the Hall of Fame vocal group The Memories, dancing, auction items, and plenty of food and fun. Golf tournament competitors and sponsors will be invited to the VIP gala.

Golf pros and celebrities scheduled to appear are Bruce Fleisher, PGA Pro and US Senior Open champion; Bob Griese, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and member of the Moffitt Cancer Center Board of Advisors; Bob Toski, World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame; Fred McGriff, five-time MLB All Star; Phil Esposito, NHL Hall of Fame; Tony Mayberry, Tampa Bay Buccaneers player and Pro Bowl player; and PT Willis, FSU Hall of Fame and former Chicago Bears quarterback.

The presenting sponsors for this event are Celgene, MGI Pharma, Novartis and Pharmion. Other sponsorship opportunities are still available. Moffitt Cancer Center is noted for its work to fight MDS. Alan List, M.D., Malignant Hematology Program leader, is the principal investigator on a study that shows important clinical results involving a drug called Revlimid, which has received fast-track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of MDS and multiple myeloma.
