Start of a tradition
SunTrust Miles for Moffitt was founded in 2006 by Karen Dalton, wife of Dr. William S. Dalton, Moffitt CEO and Center Director. More than 1,200 participants ran or walked in the 2006 inaugural event, with more expected to participate in 2007.
Mrs. Dalton created the event so that patients, families, Moffitt employees and the community could support Moffitt in a venue that promotes health and wellness while recognizing Moffitt's leadership in the fight for the prevention and cure of cancer.
Race directors are pleased to have SunTrust Bank as the Title Sponsor for the second consecutive year. Held in partnership with USF, the race "symbolizes hope in finding cures or preventive treatment for the various forms of cancer which affect everyone regardless of race, religion, gender or age," said Mrs. Dalton.
Race sponsorship chairperson is Priscilla Mack, wife of Moffitt Board Chairman Senator Connie Mack. Because of sponsor contributions - including SunTrust, the title sponsor - all race expenses are covered so that 100 percent of the race application fee benefits Moffitt’s research programs.
With the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as presenting sponsor, other sponsors include University of South Florida, News Channel 8, Tampa Tribune, WRBQ (104.7 FM), Embassy Suites and AAA Auto Club South.
