January 26, 2006

Tampa, FL - H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute has partnered with SunTrust Bank to present the first ever SunTrust Miles for Moffitt run and walk to benefit Moffitt.

SunTrust Miles for Moffitt will be held Sat., April 8 at the University of South Florida Tampa campus. Registration starts at 6 a.m. and the event begins at 8 a.m. The venue includes a five-mile competitive run and a one-mile fun run/walk for all age groups.

Karen Dalton, wife of William S. Dalton, Ph.D., M.D., Moffitt CEO and Center Director conceived the idea for the run/walk. She initiated the event as an opportunity for area residents who want to support Moffitt to participate in a fun, affordable event that has a health benefit.

"Our goal was to create a fundraising venue that truly reaches across the entire fabric of the community, and we are grateful to SunTrust Bank for helping make this event a reality," says Mrs. Dalton. "It is an enjoyable event where the community can support Moffitt's mission, and at the same time honor survivors and remember loved ones in a setting that promotes fitness and well being."

SunTrust Miles for Moffitt commemorates two milestones in 2006: Moffitt's 20th year as a leader in Florida cancer care and USF's 50th anniversary year.

JP Peterson, sports anchor for News Channel 8, will emcee and be the spokesperson for the event. In addition to SunTrust as presenting sponsor, other sponsors include USF, The Tampa Tribune, WMTX M 0.7, News Channel 8, Embassy Suites, and Zinober & McCrea, P.A.

Entry fees for both events are $20 in advance, $25 two weeks prior to the race and $30 on race day. To register or for more information, visit or call (813) 745-2006. Registration forms will also be available at SunTrust Banks.

In 2001, the National Cancer Institute awarded Moffitt the status of a Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of its excellence in research and contributions to clinical trials, prevention and cancer control. Additionally, Moffitt is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a prestigious alliance of the country's leading cancer centers, and is listed in the U.S. News & World Report as one of the top cancer hospitals in America. Moffitt's sole mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.
