H. Lee Moffitt Receives National Annual Achievement Award

March 23, 2006

Tampa, FL - The National Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), presented H. Lee Moffitt with its Annual Achievement Award for his long-standing dedication and commitment to providing patients with high-quality cancer care and for founding the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. Moffitt received the award during the ACCC's 32nd Annual National Meeting in Arlington, Virginia. Last year's award recipient was Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, Director of the National Cancer Institute.

“This recognition is accepted on behalf of all the doctors, scientists, nurses and staff who have worked so hard for 20 years to make the Moffitt Cancer Center such a special place,” says Moffitt. "Our mission is and has been to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer, and I hope during my lifetime we can find cures to save lives. In Florida this year 40,000 of our citizens will die of cancer, this is unacceptable. Our state must increase its efforts to fund cancer research so these lives can be saved."

Throughout Moffitt's tenure in the Florida legislature, his passion was to create a world-class cancer center in Florida and to have an institution where research for a cure would be as important as offering patients the most advanced treatment. In 20 short years the Moffitt Cancer Center has grown to be one of the largest and most respected cancer centers in the world.

Today, Moffitt donates much of his time to lobbying for cancer research and serves on the Board of Directors for the cancer center.

“The cancer center is fortunate to have such a passionate advocate,” says Dr. Dalton, CEO and Center Director. “We look forward to reaching our mission of contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer with Lee Moffitt by our side.”

In 2001, the National Cancer Institute awarded Moffitt the status of a Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of its excellence in research and contributions to clinical trials, prevention and cancer control. Additionally, Moffitt is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a prestigious alliance of the country’s leading cancer centers, and is listed in U.S. News & World Report as one of the top cancer hospitals in America. Moffitt’s sole mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.
