Targeted Colorectal Cancer Sequencing Leads to Potential Prognostic Role for APC Gene

Researchers from the Moffitt Cancer Center, the Gibbs Cancer Center, and elsewhere did targeted panel sequencing on nearly 500 colorectal cancer samples, focusing on more than 1,300 genes with known or suspected cancer roles. After folding in patient survival information, they identified 17 potentially informative genes that were mutated at frequencies resembling those reported for CRC tumors in the Cancer Genome Atlas.

Black women with BRCA mutations less likely to receive preventive surgery

Lead study author Tuya Pal, MD, clinical geneticist at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Inc, in Tampa, Florida, said the study data showed lower uptake of risk-reducing surgery among minority BRCA carriers, which may prompt clinicians to provide more intensive, targeted follow-up efforts, especially for black women.

Greenwich-Stamford Swim Across America fund-raiser set for June 25

For 2015, the organization’s swims generated $6.3 million. Of that, Swim Across America gave out $4.65 million, or 73 percent, in grants. Over the past decade, the swims have generated more than $65 million to fund cancer research and clinical trials at hospitals from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
