Thank You for Helping to Save Bob’s Life
When cancer threatened Bob, friends like you rallied to his side. Your support helped give this Florida neighbor the hope he needed to win the battle for his life.
Bob was on vacation when he began to feel sick. “We were in Colorado, on Pike’s Peak,” he recalls. “I thought I had altitude sickness. But then, after a few days, I started turning yellow.”
When he returned home to Florida, Bob consulted his doctor. It took several examinations to reveal that the problem was much more serious than Bob first thought. The doctor found a tumor. It was pancreatic cancer.
Once the diagnosis was made, Bob’s doctor sent him directly to Moffitt. Bob expected to undergo surgery right away. But his physician, Mokenge Malafa, M.D., discovered a dangerous complication.
Bob’s tumor was wrapped around a main blood vessel, and operating would have posed a very serious risk of cutting the vessel and causing severe blood loss. But without an operation, Bob would not survive.
“When I heard that, it was like getting the wind knocked out of me,” Bob recalls.
Dr. Malafa, however, was not giving up. He designed a plan of intensive chemotherapy and radiation that would attempt to shrink the tumor until it was small enough to operate on.
As the course of treatment went on, Bob waited — and prayed. “I have a son in college, and I just prayed that I would get to see him graduate,” Bob says. “And I have a granddaughter who’s just 5 years old. I prayed all the time that I would see her go to kindergarten.”
After three months, Bob received the best news he could hope for: The plan had worked. His tumor had shrunk! Soon after, Dr. Malafa successfully operated.
That was more than five years ago. Today, Bob smiles as he reports, “My cancer is in remission. I feel great. I even ran a 5K for pancreatic cancer awareness — and I only started running after my recovery!
“Dr. Malafa, and everyone at Moffitt — they are all such extraordinary people,” Bob says. “They are so encouraging. I truly believe Moffitt saved my life.”
You are extraordinary. Your generous gifts provide the personalized, state-of-the-art care that saves the lives of people like Bob. Please make another gift to Moffitt today, and offer that same hope to someone else facing cancer. It might even be someone you know.
