Making Radiation Therapy More Predictable - and Effective!
Spurred on by generous donors like you, Moffitt researchers have developed a new mathematical model that could improve the effectiveness of radiation therapy as a cancer-fighting tool.
It’s long been known that the success of radiation therapy can depend upon the density and location of a patient’s tissue and blood vessels, as well as oxygen levels within tumors. The exact effect of all these variables hasn’t been as well understood.
The new model brings a mathematical approach to analyzing these variables —improving the ability to predict how successful radiation therapy could be for each patient. The model also could help determine
how best to combine radiation and drug therapy.
The potential result: treatments more personalized to the needs of the individual patient — and more lives saved.
“This research offers an exciting new way to predict how a patient will respond to radiation therapy,” says Dr. Alexander R. A. Anderson, chair of Moffitt’s Integrated Mathematical Oncology Department.
