Paddle Against Cancer
It was sink or swim for Gene Evans when he was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in 2009. Five surgeries and two rounds of radiation later, he thanks Moffitt for making him a survivor. To give back, he spearheaded Paddle Against Cancer, an event that inspires people to get up and stand up against cancer. The 8th Annual event in 2018 raised $35,000, bringing the total amount donated to Moffitt over the past 8 years to $290,000.
Moffitt is grateful for the ongoing efforts of Gene and the Paddle Against Cancer Committee. In 2018, in honor of his nine-year anniversary as a survivor, he did a solo paddle to celebrate all survivors and "those who contribute to giving us that special second chance", as Gene puts it. His 16-mile solo survivorship paddle on July 13 raised an additional $35,000 for cancer research.
