Radiologist helping patient into scanning machine

Interventional Radiology provides minimally invasive, image-guided procedures for your patient’s diagnosis and treatment. In general, these procedures are more comfortable, have shorter recovery periods and have fewer risks and complications when compared to open surgical procedures. These procedures rarely require general anesthesia and can typically be done in an outpatient setting.

Moffitt Cancer Center’s Interventional Radiology Program regularly accepts patients referred by physicians across the country. Our interventional radiology specialists include board-certified physicians, advanced practice professionals, ICU-trained nurses, subspecialty technologists, and others. Interventional Radiology utilizes minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions that previously required open surgery. This results in shorter recovery times and lower complication rates for our patients. In addition to our focus on top-quality patient care, we continue to advance minimally invasive image-guided treatments through multispecialty tumor boards and research.

The multispecialty team in the Interventional Radiology Program can offer your patients a wide variety of comprehensive services related to care for multiple types of cancer which include the following:

  • Image-guided interventions
  • Vascular interventions
  • Non-vascular interventions
  • Clinical and related nonprocedural activities
  • Outpatient and inpatient consultation
  • Participation in clinical trials

Vascular Diagnosis

  • Arteriography (head and neck, visceral, extremities, etc.)
  • Venography (central and peripheral)
  • Dialysis access evaluations

Vascular Interventions

  • Venous access (placement of port-a-cath, tunneled and non-tunneled lines, PICC, etc.)
  • IVC filter placement and retrieval

What do interventional radiology specialists do?

Moffitt’s interventional radiology specialists utilize imaging (MRIs , CT scans, X-rays and ultrasounds) to perform minimally invasive procedures that previously required open surgery. At Moffitt, we strive to be at the frontline of cancer care and are up to date with the newest technology in treating cancer. Some of the frequently performed procedures at Moffitt include:

  • Placement of venous access devices (chest ports, tunneled and temporary central venous lines)
  • Tumor embolizations (Chemoembolization, Radioembolization, Bland embolization)
  • Ablation (Microwave, Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), Cryoablation, thyroid nodule RFA)
  • Irreversible electroporation (IRE ablation, NanoKnife)
  • IVC filter placements and removals
  • Arterial or venous clot removals
  • Venous and arterial patency restoration
  • Pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis thrombectomy and thrombolysis
  • Embolization of acute bleeding
  • Uterine fibroid embolization
  • Embolization for pelvic congestion syndrome
  • Embolization for varicoceles
  • Embolization of vascular malformations
  • Transjugular liver biopsy and hepatic venous pressures
  • Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation and revision
  • Balloon occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration of gastric varices (BRTO)
  • Thoracic duct embolization for chyle leaks
  • Image-guided biopsies (lungs, liver, kidney, bone, lymph node, thyroid, etc.)
  • Abscess drainages
  • Chest tube placements
  • Thoracentesis and tunneled chest PleurX catheter placement for recurrent pleural effusions
  • Paracentesis and tunneled abdominal PleurX catheter placement for recurrent ascites
  • Gastrostomy, gastrojejunostomy, and jejunostomy tube placement and exchanges
  • Bile duct interventions: percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram (PTC), biliary drainage (external and/or internal), biliary angioplasty, biliary stent placement, cholecystostomy tube placement.
  • Genitourinary interventions: pyelograms, nephrostomy tube placements, nephroureterostomy, internalization of nephrostomy tubes, ureteral balloon dilation, ureteral stent evaluations and exchanges, suprapubic catheter placements
  • Sclerotherapy of fluid collections (cysts, seromas, lymphoceles, etc.)
  • Vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty
  • Lumbar puncture with or without intrathecal chemotherapy infusion
  • Epidural blood patch
