Ensure Access to Tailored Breast Screening

At Moffitt, 3-D screening mammograms, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, take only 30 minutes and are performed by an expert team and reviewed by sub-specialized breast radiologists. Next day and evening appointments are available in an elegant environment with state-of-the-art technology at two convenient locations.

Moffitt Cancer Center recommends annual screening mammography beginning at age 40 for women at average risk. A diagnostic mammogram is a more in-depth test and does require a physician referral.

Moffitt's Breast Screening Prescription Procedures:

Screening Mammogram

The Procedure
Routine screening 3D mammography works by capturing multiple slices (images) of the breast, from several angles. Our fellowship-trained breast radiologists then review the breast scan, one thin slice at a time.

Who is it for?
Screening mammograms are for patients with no symptoms or known area of concern. Eligible patients cannot be experiencing any symptoms (pain, lumps, discharge, mass). For patients who have a personal history of breast cancer (have had breast cancer at any time in the past), it is Moffitt protocol that these patients have a diagnostic mammogram. Only female patients are eligible. Any male requiring a mammogram needs a prescription for a diagnostic mammogram.

Is a Rx needed?

  • For women 40 or older, no prescription is needed.
  • For women under 40, a prescription may be required.

To ensure that patients with dense breasts can receive the screening Moffitt recommends, consider noting: "Mammogram and Screening Breast Ultrasound if Indicated." This must be specifically written on the order/prescription.

Diagnostic Mammogram

The Procedure
A diagnostic 3D mammogram allows for additional images of the area of concern. Our fellowship-trained breast radiologists then review the breast imaging in real time, while the patient waits. For a palpable area or focal pain, an ultrasound may be done in addition to the mammogram after the diagnostic mammography reading.

Who is it for?
Patients with a history of breast cancer, experiencing symptoms, a breast abnormality from imaging, or a palpable mass are eligible for a diagnostic mammogram. A patient may have diagnostic mammography imaging every 6 months or yearly depending on provider recommendation.

Is a Rx needed?
Yes, a diagnostic mammogram requires an order/prescription: "3D Digital Diagnostic Mammogram with Ultrasound" and "Bilateral" or "Unilateral." This must be specifically written on the order/prescription.
