Moffitt at ASTRO

An oncologist in Moffitt's Radiation Oncology Department

Moffitt Cancer Center’s Radiation Oncology Department is setting the framework to become a national and international leader in the next oncologic revolution. Our program uses state-of-the-art technology and innovative research in fields such as genomics, radiomics, mathematics, physics, machine learning, liquid biopsies, immunology, and data analytics to instill personalized treatment plans that improve patient outcomes and eradicate side effects. Our gifted radiation oncologist covered a variety of radiation advancements in areas such as radiotherapy, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Radiosurgery and much more at the October 23-26, 2022 ASTRO Annual Meeting.

Dr. Palm Rusell presents research findings at ASTRO showing improved clinical outcomes in selective metastatic patients with chemotherapy-responsive disease when administering MRI-guided adaptive radiation therapy with ablative dose.

MRgSBRT Demonstrates Advantages in Treatment for Adrenal Gland Metastases
Magnetic resonance guided SBRT (MRgSBRT) shows better response than CT-based stereotactic body radiation therapy (SGRT) in treating adrenal gland metastases (AGM).

Dr. Ahmed Tests the Response of Systemic Therapies or Radiation Across Different Metastatic Disease Sites
Study presented at 2022 ASTRO presents outcomes of systemic therapies or radiation across various metastatic disease sites.

Combining Targeted Radiotherapy with Immunotherapy May Improve Outcomes for Cervical Cancer Patients
Interim results from phase 2 clinical trial reveal responses to combination therapy.

Can Higher Doses of Radiation Be Effective for Soft Tissue Sarcoma?
Acute toxicity can present challenges like skin redness and infections.

DRIVE Study Offers New Treatment Options for Vulvar Cancer
Data shows radiation therapy as effective first line treatment.

Can Bridging Radiation Therapy Increase Success of CAR T?
Moffitt study finds radiation prior to CAR T may increase survival in high-risk patients.

SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy)

SBRT, or stereotactic body radiation therapy, is a technique in which a carefully programmed system of coordinates is used to deliver narrowly focused, high-dose radiation beams to a solid tumor.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a highly targeted cancer treatment that has been in practice for more than 20 years. Despite its name, it does not require an invasive surgical procedure, but rather a unique, targeted approach to deliver precise high-dose radiation therapy.

IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy

IGRT, or image guided radiation therapy, is a technique in which frequent imaging is used to enhance accuracy throughout the course of a patient’s radiation treatment.

3D CRT (Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy)

3D CRT, or three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, is an advanced technique that incorporates the use of imaging technologies to generate three-dimensional images of a patient’s tumor and nearby organs and tissues.

Residents in the radiation oncology program

Radiation Oncology Residency Program

The Radiation Oncology Residency Program at Moffitt Cancer Center is sponsored by the University of South Florida Office of Graduate Medical Education. Moffitt Cancer Center serves as the primary training site and assumes ultimate responsibility for the residency program.
