Dr. Julio Pow-Sang in the Gastrointestinal Oncology ProgramGastrointestinal cancers are among the most challenging cancers to treat. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our Gastrointestinal Oncology Program focuses exclusively on these unique malignancies, allowing patients to receive care from some of the foremost experts in the field.

Moffitt is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, recognized internationally for our commitment to innovation in research and treatment. When physicians refer a patient to Moffitt, they are opening the door to cutting-edge therapies, clinical trials and individualized treatment plans. Through Moffitt's Gastrointestinal Oncology Program, patients not only have access to surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but also to innovative options, such as ablation, Y90 radioembolization, biological therapies and even supportive care services to help improve their quality of life. Physicians can also submit referrals for patients without a confirmed diagnosis, as our advanced diagnostic program can help patients get the answers they deserve.

To provide the broadest possible spectrum of treatment options, our oncologists and dedicated research specialists are continually investigating advancements in:

  • Endoscopic, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery
  • Novel chemotherapy drugs
  • Minimally invasive treatment options performed by interventional radiology
  • Functional imaging
  • Molecular therapies and immunotherapies
  • Pain management
  • Risk assessment, screening, early detection and prevention methods

Due to our tireless commitment to bettering diagnostic and treatment options for gastrointestinal cancers, our patient survival rates are routinely better than the national averages – even for late-stage malignancies. This is due in part to the wide range of effective therapies that we offer, as well as the unparalleled expertise of our oncologists. Moffitt's oncologists are among the most knowledgeable in the country, and every single team member in our clinic focuses exclusively on gastrointestinal cancers, producing a caliber of treatment that’s virtually unmatched. Moffitt Cancer Center once again holds a High Performing rating in gastroenterology & GI surgery, and colon cancer surgery by U.S. News & World Report in 2020. And, to ensure that every patient is obtaining the best possible therapies for his or her needs, our collaborative tumor board meets each week to review progress and make adjustments as necessary.

To simplify matters for referring physicians, we make it easy to send a patient to Moffitt’s Gastrointestinal Oncology Program. Referring physicians can complete our online form or contact a physician liaison for assistance or support, knowing that we emphasize short referral times and can accommodate urgent referrals when possible.
